5G Networks to Improve Industrial Efficiency and Competitiveness

Teltronic, in collaboration with the Aragon Technology Institute (ITA) and APD, hosted an event to showcase how digitalization and private 5G networks can drive efficiency, sustainability, and competitiveness in businesses, and how new technologies pave the way for a new era of productivity and value creation.

Esther Borao, director of ITA, welcomed the more than 50 attendees and explained that at the beginning of the year, ITA and Teltronic signed a collaboration agreement. As part of this agreement, a private 5G network has been installed at the institute’s headquarters, establishing a lab to explore the multiple possibilities this technology offers for advancing Industry 4.0. “This system allows us to make progress in the study of the massive implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) in industrial environments, extensive use of sensors, data management, and the security and cybersecurity of communication networks,” said Borao.

In addition, the event featured opening remarks from Juan Ferro, CEO of Teltronic, and Silvia Plaza, Director at APD Aragón. Both emphasized that the purpose of the event was to boost industrial competitiveness through full digitalization based on the use of private 5G networks and massive sensorization.

Cecilia Jordán, Business Development Manager at Teltronic, presented “Private 5G Networks in Industry” and explained some of the advantages of this technology for industrial environments. These include reducing the need for cabling, better performance in mobility, fewer interferences due to deployment in regulated spectrum, more efficient resource allocation by controlling the entire infrastructure, and higher levels of cybersecurity and data protection. Jordán noted that around 80% of this technological standard’s features are industry-oriented, making it essential to “promote the research and development of this technology so it can be applied effectively.”

Xabier Angulo, R&D Engineer in the Industry 4.0 Department at Gestamp, also spoke, presenting Industry 5.G, a project developed by the company in collaboration with Teltronic and Embeblue. The initiative aims to establish a new operational model to enhance industrial competitiveness through complete digitalization, leveraging private 5G networks and massive sensorization. Angulo highlighted the importance of connecting IT (Information Technology) and OT (Operational Technology) in factories and making full use of the data generated at production sites.

Representing ITA, Jesús Espelosín from the Robotics and Automation team shared advancements in intelligent and autonomous vehicles, including public buses and cars. The lab installed at the MotorLand circuit has positioned the Aragonese center as a leader in R&D&I for mobility focused on sensorized and connected vehicles.

Additionally, Francisco Rojas, Head of Technological Missions at ITA, presented proposals focused on mission-oriented innovation for rural areas. “The intelligent use of water in the agricultural sector in response to climate change could enable Aragón to become a pioneering region in the EU by applying technology to become more efficient, sustainable, and industrialized, using private 5G networks, artificial intelligence, IoT, and autonomous, lightweight, electric robots,” Rojas stated.

A roundtable discussion titled Challenges and Opportunities for Industrial Digitalization followed, featuring Francisco de Miguel (Head of Systems at Grupo Ágora), Juan A. Díaz (CEO of ASAI), Xabier Angulo (Gestamp), and Fernando Cebrián Abós (Operations Group Division Manager at FERSA). They shared their experiences in the field of Industry 4.0.

The session concluded with a visit to ITA’s 5G lab and a demonstration by Teltronic using a tactical unit installed at ITA. The company deployed a TETRA, 4G, and 5G network to showcase use cases, such as calls and video calls, video transmission from drones, and AI integration. Attendees saw how an AI application could analyze video in real time to detect whether workers were wearing safety equipment and, if not, send an alert to the control center.
